๐Ÿ’ก Tip: For the most accurate MPG reading, always fill your tank completely at both the start and end of the measurement period. Highway driving typically yields 20โ€“30% better MPG than city driving.

How to Calculate Your Real MPG

The most accurate way is the fill-up method: fill your tank completely, reset your trip odometer (or note your odometer reading), drive normally, then fill up again. Note how many gallons it took and how many miles you drove. Divide the miles by the gallons to get your real-world MPG.

Formula: MPG = Miles Driven รท Gallons Used

What Is a Good MPG?

For passenger cars, 30+ MPG is considered good. SUVs and trucks typically range from 15โ€“25 MPG. Hybrids often achieve 40โ€“60 MPG combined. If your real-world MPG is significantly lower than your vehicle's EPA rating, consider checking tire pressure, air filter condition, and driving habits โ€” all of which affect fuel efficiency.
